The issue regarding Gen. Sarath Fonseka’s citizenship has been settled by accepting him as the apolitical Common Candidate by the Commissioner of elections states former Chief Justice Sarath N. de Silva. He further said a person who is not a citizen of Sri Lanka could never come forward as a candidate for the presidential election and such a person would not be named by the Commissioner of Elections as a candidate for such an election.
As such, the issue of Gen. Fonseka’s citizenship has been settled by Commissioner of Elections accepting him as a candidate for the presidential election added the former Chief Justice.

It is not necessary to register as a voter to be appointed as a candidate for the presidential election states Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dishanayake. The Commissioner said this issuing a special press release.
The Commissioner further states according to election law of the country being registered as a voter or not does not have an effect on being a candidate or being elected.
