Method 1 -
1- Install Avisynth 2.57 or later
2- Download and unzip the AVCHD_CONVERT package:
3-Drag your .MTS files into the same folder as the unzipped files. Double Click the appropriate .bat to run
4- Open up the avs files as highlighted below with your favorite app (ie - VirtualDub), and you should be able to preview the video . Remember, with a 45 frame fade-in, you'll have to scrub forward to see anything.

PavTube MTS Converter isn't free, but I've been looking for like forever to find a converter that can convert vids to a codec my mediacenter can read and that is simple in use and understands a lot of codecs.I've had good results converting the .mts files to .mov, with the settings h.264, 1200, 1280*720, 25fps, aac.You can free download a demo version and i think you will find it is definitly worth buying. I really liked how your trial version provided full access to the functions of the software. It allowed me to test the conversion quality.
