Attack on Sirasa media complex squarely condemned Wed, 2009-01-07 05:31 Colombo, 07 January, (Asiantribune.com): The Tamil United Liberation Front has very strongly condemns the dastardly act of causing extensive damage to the buildings and causing immense damage to the most Modern Equipments belonging to very popular TV and Radio Stations, the Sirasa, Sakthi and the MTV. Also Sri Lanka Government too has strongly condemned the attack on the Sirasa media complex in Depanama, Pannipitiya, early this morning. Immediately after the news of the attack, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered a full investigation into the incident and called on the Inspector General of Police to apprehend the culprits and bring them to court. In the meantime V. Anandasangaree, President – TULF in a statement said, “These Stations are so popular among all sections of the people that they put the people to sleep peacefully in the night and put them up afresh early in the morning. He added, “These stations have now become public property and the loss is ours, the people of Sri Lanka and not that of one individual or a company. It is very unfortunate that the country has come to this state where an individual or a group of persons can hold the country to ransom.” He has urged the authorities concerned to go all out to arrest the unscrupulous persons responsible for this heinous crime and punish them suitably, as a deterrent for any one getting involved in this type of crimes in the future. Minister of Mass Media and Information, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, also condemned the attack on Sirasa media complex in Depanama, Pannipitiya and called the IGP to initiate a probe into the incident. The Minister further said that it appears that the incident was deliberately designed to bring the Government into disrepute at a time when the security forces are successfully engaged in ridding the country of the terrorist menace. Furthermore in a press release, The Prayathna People’s Movement (PPM) has vehemently condemnd the barbaric attack on the private TV channel, the Sirasa. “This is not only one of the series attacks carried out against the mass media but also a brutal attack on the entire democratic social fabric of this country, the statement said.
