The question here is who is/are the beneficiary of this killing.
Lasantha coming from a political family from Kotahena and has crossed swords with many politicians from late president J.R. Jayawardena to present President Mahinda Rajapakse. Lasantha and President Mahinda Rajapakse happened to be best of friends from the days Lasantha was the Private Secretary to late Mrs. Bandaranayke when she was the Leader of the Opposition.
According to Jeyaraj, Lasantha was a very close friend of late Anura Bandaranayke, and used to watch films with Anura. Any friend of Anura should have been a friend of President Mahinda Rajapakse as Anura and Mahinda were buddies to the end.
President Mahinda always kept his old friendships intact with Lasantha and should have treated Lasantha as a friend even though he wrote very damaging articles about his government. To my knowledge some of his articles carried false allegations, and the people who used to read his publication in the Sunday Leader, believed that the articles described true facts and were based on true facts. I also was of the same belief till I confronted Lasantha with one of his false articles.
Lasantha, while covering the Presidential elections of late Mr. Kobbekaduwa crossed swords with President’s JRJ and Premadasa, as he was reporting in support of Mr. Kobbekaduwa, even though at that time he was a supporter of the UNP. After his skirmished with the UNP hierarchy he joined the SLFP and became the Private Secretary of late Mrs. B, and later contested the Colombo North seat from the SLFP.
So, President Rajapakse as the Commander – in- Chief should have known the doings of Lasantha and his connection to the LTTE, but as the LTTE is now in the decline there is no necessity for him to kill him even though his reports created some displeasure in his mind. President MR always treats his old friends as his good friends and if he knew some one is trying to kill him he should have prevented it. So now we can eliminate President Rajapakse of this heinous crime.
Then our mind goes to former President Kumaratunga. As President Kumaratunga refused to meet some of his demands he became an arch enemy of Mrs. CBK and wrote a very many damaging article about her.
One article connected her with the establishment of a TV Channel called Channel 9 with her media adviser at that time. The suspicious information in that article forced this write to researched the Australian Securities Commission for the actual facts and submit all correct evidence to prove Lasantha was fabricating stories, he drop persuading her and Mrs. CBK took him to courts. As Mrs. CBK‘s lawyers committed a technical error and Lasantha himself was a lawyer, managed to escaped without any convictions.
One of the people who should have got Lasantha killed for all his fabricated stories was none other than the former President Kumaratunga. But she never attempted to kill him or even other journalist or even SB and Rajitha for all the wild accusations levelled at her. So we can eliminate Mrs. CBK from this heinous crime.
On his way establishing his media empire he crossed from SLFP in 1995 to UNP and became a very close friend of Ranil Wickramasinghe and Ranils other friends from the Royal College group, Jayantha and Charles Ganakoon brothers hardcore LTTE supporters. Jayantha is the founding head of the Justice for Tamils and is the Leader of the International LTTE Wing or the organization. Lasantha, with Ganakoon brothers, according to very reliable sources helped Ranil to get the 2000 Constitution prepared by CBK’s government defeated in the Parliament, and to get Prof. G.L.Peiris, S.B Dissanayake and the other Ministers and MP’s to the UNP. Mrs. CBK dissolved the Parliament and Ranil won the election in 2000/2001, and posted Lasantha’s wife Sonali Samarasinghe to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Australia (Canberra) as a Media Attaché.
Sri Lankan anti-LTTE Diaspora group was very happy as a very seasoned journalist she will do a wonderful job to curb the spread of falls propaganda by the LTTE supporters in Australia. But she never did any things to curb the false propaganda, but was cultivating people close to LTTE in Canberra and other Capitals, also she spend most of her time to track down Charles Ganakoon to get him to Sri Lanka as requested by Ranil (Federal Police was after him). At that time we never knew the connection between Lasantha and Sonali.
Now we come to another high profile person who may have a hand in this killing, i.e. Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse who has filed a deformation case against Lasantha claiming Millions. Will he killed this man and loose his millions. The case against Lasantha is based on his false accusation he levelled at Gotabaya for purchasing MIG 27 Jets to wipe out the LTTE and accusing him of collecting millions from this deal. His accusation was based on the Procurement Guidelines, and in my professional opinion as a Procurement Expert, Gotabaya and the logistic Company has not committed any crime by violating the Procurements Guidelines by purchasing these MIG 27 Jets as the Procurement Guideline created ambiguity.
Will somebody who is waiting to get millions kill that person? So we can eliminate Gotabaya Rajapakse as a suspect.
Now we are left with the people Lasantha helped to get Rajapakse government to international disrepute. That is the LTTE supporters as well as the people in the UNP supporting and keeping company with Ganakoon brothers.
Now we come to the million dollar question who can be benefited by killing Lasantha. As one veteran journalist has written ..."Who would benefit by casting a shadow over the success that our soldiers have achieved in the Wanni? Needless to say, the only ones who stand to gain are not only the LTTE, sections of the UNP and the NGO 'peaceniks' but also the so-called international community which has been conspiring to impose its own 'political solutions' on this country".
So who could have killed this journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga? Somebody afraid of him spills the beans of his shady transaction with the LTTE. Why some section of the UNP is meeting Jayantha Ganakoon in his LA (USA) residence very recently and doing special trips to see him and other supporters of the LTTE very frequently. What about the shady deals done during the 2000/2001 election and what part played by Lasantha to obtain those shady deals.
Jeyaraj says that there were four (4) motor cyclists in the death squad, and the RAF was 100 meters from the incident. RAF sentries will never shoot without orders or unless some one try to enter the RAF base by force. This incident is a solitary incident where even the well experience service personnel’s will hesitate to shoot some one without knowing the facts. Is this a conspiracy to get the GOSL entangle in this mess?
Without coming to very radical conclusions we must wait and see how the final chapter of this story will end and in my opinion there may be many other chapters to this incident. If we can recall how former President Premadasa was eliminated after all the help he gave to LTTE through Paskaralingam to get the hidden money, the killing of Lasantha may be to hide the identities of some important people in the country having a hand in the LTTE cookie jar.
As Raj says in his article "Whatever he was, and whatever he did, he should not have been killed for what he was or what he did or did not do". I am completely support this statement and in my opinion this heinous crime should have never occurred.
