Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen gets right down to the fundamentals of design in this fascinating back-to-basics series. He tackles real problems in real homes as he explores six themes: space, colour, light, texture and pattern, balance and order, and personality. In addition to his own in-depth knowledge of design principles, Laurence calls on a colour forecaster, psychologists and a perception specialist to explain and demonstrate the science behind the how and the why.

Taking a real home where a design problem is all too apparent, he demonstrates some simple psychology and basic experiments in a 'design lab' back at the studio -- and it's all done without knocking down walls or spending big bucks.

Space comes under the spotlight in the first programme. Lack of space is a common problem in British homes which, surprisingly, have 20 square metres less space than Japanese homes, with an average of only 120 square metres.

Just as with modern books, paper was the most common material out of which codices were made. The Maya made paper from the inner bark of fig trees (Ficus), called kop? in Maya and today commonly known as amate paper. Although they also used deer skin, cotton cloth and maguey paper, apparently the Maya preferred kop?.

Carl Gustav Jung (26 July 1875 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist, an influential thinker and the founder of analytical psychology (also known as Jungian psychology). Jung's approach to psychology has been influential in the field of depth psychology and in countercultural movements across the globe. Jung is considered as the first modern psychologist to state that the human psyche is "by nature religious" and to explore it in depth. He emphasized understanding the psyche through exploring the worlds of dreams, art, mythology, religion and philosophy. Though not the first to analyze dreams, he has become perhaps the most well known pioneer in the field of dream analysis. Although he was a theoretical psychologist and practicing clinician, much of his life's work was spent exploring other areas, including Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, sociology, as well as literature and the arts.

Tintin's (Very) Complete Adventures in English

If you aren't from the US, seeing Tintin's name may be like meeting an old friend, but he's like soccer: in the United States, people just never have gotten Tintin, a beloved figure around the world since the 1920s, hero of a series of comic strips and books by Belgian artist Herg, pen name of Georges Remi (1907–1983).
Tintin is a reporter, probably Belgian (but Herg never made his nationality clear). He always (after all these decades) looks boyish, and part of the charm of the series is that a boy is cast into all kinds of serious situations; with innocence and honesty, he deals with a range of criminals and problems and comes out on top. We know nothing about his family; we do know that he lives alone, reads widely, apparently speaks several languages, and is in top physical condition. His fashion sense may leave something to be desired. Of course, he couldn't be so successful without his faithful sidekick, his fox terrier Snowy (Milou in French), whose thought balloons provide a running commentary on the stories. Slapstick comedy mixes with sophisticated satire, as well as political and cultural commentary throughout the stories, and the more you know about history, the more you will appreciate the Tintin stories.
Alcoholism, violence against animals, colonialism - parents, take note. But, everyone take note of the elegant drawing, the careful research either in creating fictitious countries or speculating about space travel. Enjoy these little glimpses into a world that is almost, but not quite, our own.

Photography in the RAW: David Noton - Get Inside This Pro's Boots

David Noton is a professional award winning landscape and travel photographer. His first DVD called “Chasing the light” looked at the essentials of landscape photography. This second DVD “Photography in the RAW” continues where the first DVD left off, and looks to improve and challenge your photography with practical examples in a variety of locations and shooting subjects.

The DVD is split into four main sections: Home patch, Interests, Foreign Adventures, Roots. Each section covers a number of different subjects including shooting at dawn, dusk, shooting infra-red, shooting a ship, shooting abroad, shooting people, fireworks, macro and capturing the moment such as interesting sights while travelling to and from a location. You can also play the whole DVD from beginning to end.

He also explains the variety of lenses used in landscape photography from extreme wide-angle, fish-eye, tilt and shift lenses, zoom, telephoto and the use of tele-convertors, and extension tubes (for macro). As well as camera techniques, such as exposure compensation, use of HDR (for extension of dynamic range, not extreme HDR – he's not a fan), creating panoramas, different metering modes explained with recommendations, reducing lens flare, and backup procedures / memory card management.

David Noton is an interesting person to watch, with a easy to understand use of language, and the techniques and examples he demonstrates are clearly explained, with the use of live view from the actual camera when needed showing what the changes being made look like. For example when using a graduated neutral density filter, David will slide it into position using live view, and you can see on screen the effect it is having. The delivery is very good, and there are some elements of humour although they seem a little forced, and slightly unnecessary as David's content is very interesting without, and the subjects and locations are interesting and entertaining to watch.

The DVD is a great way to learn basics of landscape photography, and also answers some of the “hot questions” like: “How important is the actual camera?”, “What to pack in the bag?”, “How to get sharp shots using a tripod?”, “How to use Hyper Focal distance” and “How to use the histogram, for maximum tonal range and detail?” - The DVD format is a great way to visually learn some of the techniques, and seeing them in action makes it very easy to learn quickly, as some of the techniques may take a lot longer to read about on the internet or from a book.

I have thus reripped everything I could get a hold of and thus present the most complete Martin audio collection ever assembled. I have processed all these UNABRIDGED books in the following ways:

Martin has written so many short stories and worked on so many projects that a complete audio bibliography would be impossible. HOWEVER, I have compiled here, I believe, a complete collection of his works that exist on audio. In addition to the 5 reripped A Song of Ice and Fire versions are 3 alternate recordings from that series as well as the complete Tales of Dunk and Egg series which takes place in the same world. I have also managed to find two recordings of Martin`s double-volume anthology of short stories and novellas, Dreamsongs: A RRetrospective. Altogether I believe this to be the most exhaustively complete audio collection of George R. R. Martin`s work offered to date.
