Some have found it easy to go in and make a direct copy of your images, videos, and sound folders so you can just copy them back later. Back up your data using PC suite content copier and then go ahead and follow the steps to upgrade the FW. Once finished it is highly recommended that you only restore your contacts and NOT all your settings. Another good idea is to reformat the memory card but it is not always necessary.

Now that you’ve backed up your data here’s how to update the Firmware.

First step is you will need to go here Nokia Europe - Download - Device software update and download the Nokia Software Updater. Once this is installed all you need to do is plug your phone in and run the software. Be sure to read all the information it gives you.

Now we go into what to do if it shows there is no update available for your phone but you know there is. The reason for this is that your service provider has their own version of Firm-Ware running on the phone and they haven’t released an update for it yet. This is when you need to How do I de-brand and upgrade the firmware of my device?

. This in essence makes your phone unlocked and available to be used on any service provider BUT may void your warranty.

9) Can I compare the N95 to the IPhone?

No, just no, there’s really no comparison at all and the IPhone doesn’t stand a chance.

Nokia PC suite common issues

There’s a lot of issues relating to PC suite and connecting the N95 to your computer. Some of the common things to try if you are having issues are

Plug the USB cable into a different port and try again.

Restart the phone and PC

Uninstall PC suite and ensure that all the Nokia files are removed from the computer then reinstall the latest version.

Bluetooth stuff needed here……..

There is a version of PC suite for the NSeries specifically but it’s been reported that it doesn’t work as good as the standard PC suite.

GPS and GPS problems

Newer versions of the FWs have assisted GPS listed as aGPS and it is suggested that you turn this on. aGPS uses the cell tower information to estimate your location and helps the internal GPS get a lock quicker.

Deciding to use AGPS

AGPS (Assisted GPS) vastly improves lock on time for getting a GPS lock. It does use a small amount of data, usually around 3-6 KB worth. This is a very tiny amount of data, so you only need to worry about this if you don’t have a data plan and your data cost is high. The aGPS function only requires data to be downloaded when getting a lock and does not use a constant data download. If you don't loose GPS lock then you shouldn't see more than a tiny amount of data being used.

Getting a lock:

First, check AGPS is enabled. First, go to - Settings - phone settings - General - positioning. In there, under positioning server - server address check you have exactly this: supl.nokia.com Note there is no 'www', A few new phones I have seen now have had something else, which didn’t work. Once changed, AGPS worked fine.

Make sure your access point is correct; this is whatever method used to connect to the net on your phone, obviously operator defined.

In positioning methods tick -

Assisted GPS

and

Integrated GPS

Do NOT tick the others, network based isn’t much good and only Bluetooth if you intend to use a Bluetooth GPS receiver. If so, Bluetooth only should be ticked.

If you still do not get a lock after 30 minutes when you have done the following:

* Made sure AGPS is on, and it has all the correct settings,

* Have the phone open, at the right angle, in open sky,

* Have left it not moving,

Then chances are there’s a problem with the GPS receiver. It has been reported to have been a problem with the arial/contacts. If it’s under warranty, its worth trying to get it replaced/fixed. If its not, or your feeling brave, you can attempt to fix/clean it yourself, which has solved the issue for some people.

Certificates and Application signing

To start off this is a lot easier than people make it out to be and once you do the initial set up for signing apps you will be able to sign as many and as often as your heart desires. It is worth taking the time to go through the process and learn to do it yourself.

Why am I getting "Certificate Error" when I try and install something?

Accelerometer

The Nokia N95 has a 3d accelerometer built in. This is a hardware device that senses movement of the phone on more than 1 axis. For example with a program called Rotate Me RotateMe 2.0 Betas by Samir . Other helpful info is your location and your carrier. There’s a Thanks button at the bottom right of each persons post, if you appreciate the help then use this button. Thanks to Mr G the man of a million themes we have one of the most extensive collections of themes I’ve seen around. Check out our theme section often as Mr G uploads many almost daily. Now for some of the most FAQs and issues The first thing you should try doing if you are having a problem is restarting the phone. Just turn it off for a minute and then turn it back on and try again. This does relieve some minor issues and should be tried first. If it’s a connection to the computer that’s the problem, try restarting the phone and the computer and try again. 1) Will I be charged for using Wi-Fi at my house? No you will not be charged. 2) How do I install new fonts? Fonts! There is a 12 gig card being tested from SanDisk currently. 8) I’m going to upgrade my Firm-Ware what should I do and how do I do it? The first thing to do is back up all your data from your phone and your memory card. Nokia PC suite common issues There’s a lot of issues relating to PC suite and connecting the N95 to your computer. Some of the common things to try if you are having issues are Plug the USB cable into a different port and try again. Restart the phone and PC Uninstall PC suite and ensure that all the Nokia files are removed from the computer then reinstall the latest version. Bluetooth stuff needed here…….. There is a version of PC suite for the NSeries specifically but it’s been reported that it doesn’t work as good as the standard PC suite. GPS and GPS problems Newer versions of the FWs have assisted GPS listed as aGPS and it is suggested that you turn this on. aGPS uses the cell tower information to estimate your location and helps the internal GPS get a lock quicker. Deciding to use AGPS AGPS (Assisted GPS) vastly improves lock on time for getting a GPS lock. Getting a lock: First, check AGPS is enabled. In positioning methods tick - Assisted GPS and Integrated GPS Do NOT tick the others, network based isn’t much good and only Bluetooth if you intend to use a Bluetooth GPS receiver. If so, Bluetooth only should be ticked. If you still do not get a lock after 30 minutes when you have done the following: * Made sure AGPS is on, and it has all the correct settings, * Have the phone open, at the right angle, in open sky, * Have left it not moving, Then chances are there’s a problem with the GPS receiver. It has been reported to have been a problem with the arial/contacts. If it’s under warranty, its worth trying to get it replaced/fixed. If its not, or your feeling brave, you can attempt to fix/clean it yourself, which has solved the issue for some people. Certificates and Application signing To start off this is a lot easier than people make it out to be and once you do the initial set up for signing apps you will be able to sign as many and as often as your heart desires. It is worth taking the time to go through the process and learn to do it yourself. Why am I getting "Certificate Error" when I try and install something? Accelerometer The Nokia N95 has a 3d accelerometer built in. This is a hardware device that senses movement of the phone on more than 1 axis. For example with a program called Rotate Me RotateMe 2.0 Betas by Samir . At the end of the day making such a decision is up to you and no member of the forum is going to be able to tell you one way or the other, but the options can be weighed up as follows. N95 8GB vs N95 Original - Difference Between Original N95 & n95 8GB There are, as with most things, pros and cons to each option and members will happily answer any questions you have before purchase :) How do I convert my DVDs to watch them on my n95? There are many different methods of doing this; here are some settings for various software which may be helpful in providing the best quality conversion for you. MobiDVD: Select "iPod video" as your device. Set bit rate to 1500. Under "advanced settings" select MPEG 4 AUDIO as an AAC Select trim at full - stretch to fit. WinAVI MP4: IPod video: Under advanced settings: 320 X 240 VIDEO SIZE; 48000 AUDIO BITRATE; 1024000 VIDEO BITRATE. PocketDivxEncoder: N95 DivX Video Conversion - Vox - credit to spyda! If you don't want to mess about so much, convert your DVD to AVI using a program like WinAVI and then put it on your phones memory card. You can then watch it using divx for mobile or other programs that support AVI. If you're not comfortable with this, simple online creators are available at places such as mobile9 and ownskin. I suspect my n95 may be a fake, how can I tell? Most importantly read the guide in this thread. Firstly, you should be able to tell by obvious physical signs: Compare the appearance to specification models. Some are known to have touch screens or 2 SIM card slots. Genuine n95 models do not have these features. To check for a genuine Nokia battery, go here. If you are concerned about the authenticity of your phone, try and take some pictures and post them to us along with some details on the forum. Between us we should be able to spot a scam.
