UK diplomats remain in place despite North Korea warning as Pyongyang moves missiles onto coast prompting fears of imminent attack

Beijing is believed to have sent private messages to Kim Jong-un urging caution

    Korea-getty.jpg

British and other foreign embassies in Pyongyang appeared to be remaining in place today after North Korea warned that it could not guarantee their safety.
Diplomats from the relatively small number of states which maintain missions in the country were asked to the Foreign Ministry and told that they would be given help to move out by next Wednesday because of the threat of conflict with the United States and South Korea.
The move by Kim Jong-un’s regime, which appear to have caught the international community by surprise, was being interpreted as yet another attempt to ratchet up tension and reinforce the message that it is serious about its military challenge.

Iran on N.Korea side - Chief Commander warn US

    jazayeri.jpg

Iran’s commander warns US over any possible war on Korean peninsula

A senior Iranian commander warns that any possible war on the Korean peninsula would inflict great losses on the US and its allies.
Deputy Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri said that the US military presence in South Korea is the root cause of tensions in the region.
He also criticized the United Nations and other international organizations for inaction on the issue.
Jazayeri went on to say that if international bodies had acted efficiently and independent of major powers, they could have prevented tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
He said North Korea has no choice but to confront America's mounting pressures and plots.

N.Korea Seriously said Guam US base as its First target, short while ago.

North Korea threats spark buzz on Guam, not panic

By The Associated Press • Saturday, April 06, 2013

C.J. Urquico has lived on Guam for 19 years so he's used to a military backdrop to everyday life. Navy ships visit, Air Force jets fly overhead and war games are played off the Pacific island's shores.

There soon will be another military element in this U.S. territory _ a defense system will be installed to shoot down incoming missiles and warheads. Its deployment comes amid intensifying threats from North Korea, which recently listed Guam among its targets for a nuclear attack on the United States.

That laid-back Guam is a named player in a nuclear showdown is the talk of the island. But at least for now, the population of about 180,000 is taking it in stride and not running for cover.

"The worst thing that can happen is we allow it to terrorize us," said Urquico, a 36-year-old creative director for a telecommunications company. And while "there's no real sinister feeling in the air," he added: "People are definitely paying attention. I mean, how many times do we ever trend on Twitter?"

The remote, 209-square-mile island in the Pacific is no stranger to international conflict. The island's waters are a graveyard for rusting equipment from World War II and the oldest residents remember living under Japanese occupation.

But many residents aren't taking the North Korean threat too seriously. The annual typhoon season may be a bigger concern.

"Fortunately everybody has concrete homes here so we're sort of a bunker already," joked Leonard Calvo, vice president of Calvo Enterprises, a firm that invests in insurance, real estate, media and retail and other businesses in Guam and other islands.

"I think this guy from North Korea is just puffing out his chest. A lot of people are numb to it."

The island's social media is abuzz with memes mimicking North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, with one joking that he is worried about "Guam bombs," a popular term for beat-up, used cars on the island.

Not everyone is taking the issue lightly. Headlines about the threats have flashed across the island's main news website for the past week, and some residents are brainstorming plans in case the worst-case scenario comes true.

Thomas Perez, an 18-year-old student at Guam High School, said he already has picked out a place to barricade himself in case the attack occurs.

"I could probably get there in 15 minutes," he said.

Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo said the government is providing information to help residents prepare, including guidance for where to hide if radiation is in the air.

"As a governor and a father and a husband and a grandfather, I do have some concerns because of the proximity of Guam to North Korea," he said. "We are about a three hour flight away. That's about half the distance from Guam to Hawaii."

But he also stressed that an attack is a remote possibility and residents should go on with their daily lives.

The Pentagon system on its way to the island is part of a "layered" defense giving the military multiple opportunities to shoot down incoming missiles and warheads before they reach their targets. It's specifically designed to shoot down missiles during their final stage of flight, and is expected to arrive on Guam within the next few weeks.

Even if nothing more happens, for some residents, the international attention is significant in itself. University of Guam President Robert Underwood said the threat is an opportunity for students and educators to discuss Guam's role in global military strategy.

Urquico said the situation lets Guam's residents know they're not completely invisible to the rest of the world.

"I've never heard anyone make a direct threat to Guam," he said. "My response was: `Wow, they can find Guam on the map? Most Americans can't.'"

AP writers Anita Hofschneider, Oskar Garcia and Audrey McAvoy contributed to this report from Honolulu.

Thailand ready to move Thais from South Korea if conflict occurs

    Saturday, 06 April 2013 By

BANGKOK, April 5 – A contingency plan has been readied to relocate Thai nationals in case of an emergency in South Korea following recent threats by the North, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said.

She said appropriate Thai government agencies have worked out preparations but she believed the North Korean threats would not escalate to a violent dispute.

North Koreans Christians call for prayer as nation is ‘already in combat mode’

North Korean Christians appealed for prayers as Pyongyang warned foreign embassies to leave by April 10 after moving medium range missiles to its east coast, raising fears of imminent war.

“We are to meet the decisive battle with a gun in one hand and a hammer in the other,” said a Christian leader in a message published by Open Doors, an advocacy and aid group working in the country they describe as “a Stalinist-run nation.”
“The military army, navy, air force troops, strategic rocket troops, the red guards and the red youth guards are already in combat mode. Urgent meetings are being held everywhere, regardless if it is day or night,” the leader said, speaking on condition of anonymity in comments monitored by BosNewsLife Friday, April 5.
“At those meetings, officials make decisions on what needs to happen in case war breaks out and everyone, including women, needs to be combat ready,” the leader added about an order North Koreans recently received from what the Christian called the “high command.”
Britain tried to calm down tensions saying was “no immediate” plan to shut its embassy in North Korea.
The significance of next April 10 remained unclear, but observers said was mentioned as a date for the possible closure of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, a facility inside the North where South Korean companies employ 53,000 people.
The United States said Friday, April 5, it was taking the threats seriously. The U.S. would “not be surprised” if North Korea launched a missile, said White House spokesman Jay Carney.
In statements seen by BosNewsLife North Korean church leaders said they were “asking Christians worldwide to pray” for their country amid the increased war threats and combat preparation by North Korean military officials.
Despite the hardship, there are at least 400,000 devoted North Korean Christians, according to Open Doors, with many praying war can be avoided.
