The radio-active system provides heat.These power units have been used by NASA since 1961.  The only difference is the radio active material itself.  Now they use Pu-238 as it has several advantages - and of course the technology has improved. But the principle is the same.PS: My comments are only related about the power unit. Not about the other systems. The Perseverance is a marvelous piece of engineering.</blockquote>
