NATIONAL FINE ARTS CENTRE IN COLOMBO NOMADS GROUND

Construction work on the International Arts Performance Theatre is being carried out in an accelerated phase. The Minister of Culture and Arts Mr. T.B.Ekanayake addressing a media briefing this evening said that the Theatre, located at Nomads Grounds is being built at a cost of Rs 3,080 Million and China has financed a grant to cover 75% of the expenditure of this project, and the agreed to bear the balance 25% of the cost. However, China later agreed to bear the whole cost of the project and this theatre, which is the largest in Sri Lanka and the South East Asia has become an outright gift from the Chinese government. The five storied Theatre is built on a land area of 2.17 hectares and the Centre covers a space of 14000 square meters.

The Auditorium covers three floors and has seating capacity for 1288 spectators. This International Theater has an electronically movable and changeable screen and advanced technical lighting capabilities and sound systems. The Centre has two open air theatres and one indoor theatre and hence 3 Drama or Musical performances can be staged at a particular time. It is equipped with a special door which could prevent the spread of a fire.

One open air Theatre is on the 5th floor and many scenic sites in the Colombo City are visible for this floor. The other open air theatre covers the garden area of the Centre.

The Minister said Theatre also has facilities and rest rooms, make up rooms and training rooms for the artistes. Nearly 350 vehicles could be parked in the ground floor and the nearby Viharamadevi Park also could be used for vehicle parking. He further said that the theatre is being built in the shape and form similar to the Lotus Pond in Polonnaruwa and it will be decorated with sculptures and arts belong to the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa ears.

The construction work is being carried out by the Yang Jiyan Company of China, and the theatre has been designed by China in accordance with the construction and architectural designs and suggestions provided by the Sri Lankan Engineers, designers and architects. (niz).
