Na ban kandy side eka tamai strong, monawa unath un tikak baya wenna athi.... MR'ge puthane inne :lol:

Navy Sc came out with a superlative performance to defeat the reigning champs Kandy SC 14 points to 13 in their inter club match played at Walisera grounds today. Navy SC coming in to the game after a close match against the Soldiers last week (16-08) edged out the Kandians in a closely fought out battle.

Full time score – 14-13 Navy won

Half time score – 11-08 Navy leading

Kandy on the other hand came in to the match with a comfortable win against the lads from Maitland Crescent CH&FC (55-07) but looked below par against a pumped up Navy outfit. Kandy SC missed the services of skipper Fazil Marija who was sidelined due to an ankle injury he obtained while in Singapore.

Navy were the first to score with a Dev Anand penalty just four minutes in to the game. Kandy SC hit back ten minutes later with a brilliant try from Gayan Weeraratne who went over to score on the left. Pradeep Liyanage and Mohomed Sheriff did the initial work and swung the pass out to Gayan who added the finishing touches. Conversion was missed by Saliya Kumara which proved to be costly at the end of the match. Kandy however in the lead by just three points.

Then came arguably the best try of the match, with Nuwan Hettiarachchi coming in to fly half off a ruck thumped a cross kick which saw Chua Susantha collecting in the far right to touch down unopposed. It was a perfectly timed kick by the Navy Full back which saw his team mate Susantha go over to take the lead. Anand who had a brilliant game with the boot then extended their advantage through a perfectly executed drop goal. It was some quick thinking by the part of Malawana who popped the pass to Dev who slotted over a peach of a drop goal to make it 11-05 in favour of Navy. Kandy SC then reduced the gap through a Saliya Kumara penalty just minutes before the end of the first half. Half time score 11-08 in favour of the Sailors.

The second half saw a reigning champs come out with a bang with replacement wing three-quarter Mohomed Jabbar going over for a superb try just five minutes in to the half. It was a brilliant set of hands by the Kandy lads which saw Jabbar go over to put his side in from by two points. Mohomed Sheriff played an exceptional game in the loose and played a vital part in linking up with the rest of the backs which comprised of Pradeep Liyanage, and Gayan Weeraratne. The former Sri Lanka skipper Sanjeewa Jayasinghe lacked the speed which he possessed a couple of years back and was well shut down by the likes of Susantha and Hettiarachchi.

Navy SC trailing by just two points threw everything at the Kandy defense which ultimately paid off when Anand thumped over his second drop goal of the match to make it 14-13. It was another perfectly executed drop goal which saw them sneak in front by just one point.

Kandy SC then threw everything but the kitchens sink at the latter part of the match but could not falter the Navy defense. Navy SC had some anxious moments during the last few minutes of the game with the Kandy three’s in full motion but held their nerve to win the game against the once unbeaten Kandy SC.

Royal Panadura players assaulted in Kandy
    SATURDAY, 15 MAY 2010 00:41

Royal Panadura rugby players were assaulted allegedly by players of St Sylvester’s who lost their crucial Under 20 Division 1B inter-schools rugby match played at Bogambara yesterday.

The two teams came into the game with an unbeaten record having won both their matches played earlier.

The crucial encounter saw Royal Panadura recording a close 22-20 victory after the two teams shared honours at five a piece at half time.

Eshana Fernando the master in charge of Royal Panadura said that 12 of his boys have been admitted to the Kandy hospital with severe injuries to their head and body.

Majority of them are supposed to be serious.

Eshana said the opposing players unable to stomach the defeat allegedly assaulted the boys unmercifully and though the security personals were there they were unable to bring it under control.

According to him even the officials of the losing side were helpless and were unable to bring their boys under control who randomly assaulted the players.

This is food for thought for the officials of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association who are the organizers of this tournament. Incidents of this nature should be nipped in the bud before it gets out of hand and spread like a virus.

On the other hand the school authorities should take stern action against the mischief makers who have taken the law to their hands and spoilt the name of the school.

The winners accumulated their points through a goal and three tries with the losers making up their points through four tries. Winger Chamal Chathuranga scored three tries with full back Harsha Iroshan scored the other try who also made the conversion.
