‘War-crimes jurisdiction lies with Sri Lanka’ ‘I am for the unitary state’ ‘Only said I want the 13th implemented’ -
Indian news channel NDTV has distorted a statement made by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe saying he was in agreement to give “full autonomy” to Tamil areas.
Official Twitter account of NDTV tweeted on Saturday afternoon a statement made by the Sri Lankan Prime Minister saying, “In principle, we have agreed to full autonomy to Tamil areas, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe tells NDTV.”
The controversial Tweet, which was based on a highly sensitive matter to all Sri Lankans, came as a “teaser” for a news item that was yet to be aired.
After the Tweet was posted, ‘The Nation’ contacted Prime Minister Wickremesinghe to ascertain whether he made such a statement in an interview with the prominent Indian news channel.
‘No, no, no...What I said was that I am for the implementation of the 13th Amendment and that I am for the unitary state,” Prime Minister Wickremesinghe told ‘The Nation’, explaining his position on the matter.
It is clear that NDTV, on its official Twitter, has quoted the Sri Lankan Prime Minister out of context and portrayed a wrong picture about the entire matter.
The government, in its 100-day program, has not promised anything in relation to the 13th amendment or giving ‘political autonomy’ to predominantly Tamil areas in the North.
The National Unity Government, led by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, are now in the process of implementing the 100-day program which primarily deals with democratization of the society and introducing good government.
Meanwhile, Wickremesinghe has also told NDTV that the jurisdiction to try any Sri Lankan on war crimes lies with Sri Lanka as it has not signed the Rome Statute. Sri Lanka will engage with the UN, but any jurisdiction will lie with Sri Lanka, he has added.
The NDTV tweet on this particular topic has no mention of the jurisdiction clause of Wickremesinghe’s response.
