So when you buy your HDD make sure it is compeible with SATA 1. For example Hitachi Drives do not have jumper or anything to change it to SATA 1. It defaulted to SATA 2. So if you connect that one to SATA 1 controller it won't detect. Anyway Hitachi provides a software to change HDD SATA setting to SATA 1. Anyway not all hitachi drives support this feature.
