My computer is a P IV and my mother board does not have a SATA connector, only IDE.

But, I've heard that you can connect a SATA hard disk via SATA to IDE converter.

Could someone give me more info on these SATA to IDE converters.

I take it that you cant install a OS in a hard disk using these converters (because they need drivers). I'm I correct?
What are the dis advantages of using a SATA to IDE converter?

Those converters could be "unforgivingly" expensive. And there could be performance issues because now there is somewhat overhead involved. I suggest that you check both the performance benchmarks of such adapters and price of them, and come to a conclusion as to whether you want one or not. You "might" be better off buying a new motherboard with SATA ports!!! (I mean, you are then getting more than one SATA drive connection capability)

You are right

They are too expensive and the performances are slow too.

I think I should buy a new motherboard (and a processor) :( :( :(
Yes. That is a better investment. I mean, you will have to ditch that converter soon anyway, when you move to a newer system.

I have one of those PCI SATA + IDE card as it's a piece of crap! CPU utilization goes to 100% when using a HDD connected to that. It sux!

Most of the current SATA discs are SATA 2, 3Gb/s ones, most of controller cards available in sri lanka supports only SATA 1, 1.5Gb/s drives. So when you buy your HDD make sure it is compeible with SATA 1. For example Hitachi Drives do not have jumper or anything to change it to SATA 1. It defaulted to SATA 2. So if you connect that one to SATA 1 controller it won't detect. Anyway Hitachi provides a software to change HDD SATA setting to SATA 1. Anyway not all hitachi drives support this feature. So when you buy your disc if it is Hitachi one make sure it is in that litst. visit http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/FTool_User_Guide_208.pdf page 5 for details.

Or you can skip Hitachi crap :D (though they are the only 500GB HDDs available here :()

Where can you buy a IDE hard disk these days?

I'm looking to buy one, but IDE is not available in any shop I looked. :(
