    • Ergosterol (provitamin D-2). This type is found in plants.
    • Ergocalciferol (vitamin D-2). This type is also found in plants.
    • 7-dehydrocholesterol. This type is found in animals.
    • Calciferol (vitamin D-3). This type is formed in the body from exposure to sunlight.

what type of vitamin should we take ? any brand name ?

Vitamin D works in many ways. It helps to regulate Calcium & phospates in the body. It helps in respiratory diseases. During the first wave of Covid, the Italians noticed those who initially succumbed had lower Vitamin D levels. When the SARS infection broke out, the older people were dosed with IV injections of Vitamin D with a strength if 15,000 IU and above. The exact mechanism is unknown but Vitamin D is an active bystander in several infectious diseases.
My sister, a medical doctor, decided to treat me with vitamin D recently. She told me that I needed to take this vitamin even though I live in Sri Lanka.

As I mentioned before living in SL or in the Sun doesn't help much. With dark skins the Vitamin D synthesis is low. Here's a recent notification from the MOH.

"Among Sri Lankan adults Vitamin D deficiency was 58.8% and insufficiency 31.4%. Overall around 90% of Sri Lankan adults are not having adequate levels of vitamin D. A study conducted in Southern Sri Lanka (2013) found that overall VDD among community-dwelling healthy women was 56.2%. Another study found the age and sex-adjusted prevalence of VDD was 57.2% in an adult Sri Lankan urban population (2015). Among school children aged 10-18 years (2017), the prevalence of VDD and VDI was 13.2% (95%CI: 11.9%- 14.5%) and 45.6% (95%CI: 43.7%-47.5%), respectively. The results shown imply the high burden of VDD & VDI which suggests the government plan mitigation strategies to reduce the attributed disease burden in the country."

    Just take 2000IU a day.

PS: You can always do a blood test and check.

Forget the RDA for the West but do NOT exceed 4000IU. Have you ever taken a blood test for Vitamin D levels? If so, let me know the results.
Nearly six out of 10 people in SL are Vitamin D deficient. That's the reality. :(
