Nishantha Muthuhettigama, the controversial politician who was elected to the Southern Provincial Council on the UPFA ticket now says that he fears for his life and intends to seek political asylum.
His says he is prepared to go to any country and has started processing the matter already through embassies and high commissions in Sri Lanka. Talking to Daily Mirror, he said his choices were Canada, Switzerland and India. He added that he was being helped by friends abroad.
He said that almost half of the members of the Rajapaksa family were not citizens of Sri Lanka, and the only choice now left for him was to follow them. He wanted political asylum only for a short while, and his objective was to allow them to rule without any hindrance, he said.
The Rajapaksa family members had created a situation such that he could not go before the public, and that was why he had been compelled to stay in Colombo, he alleged. He said that he was ashamed to face the people of Galle after he had stood by the President, to whom he had done no wrong. He also said that he was in this predicament due to the actions of- Anarkalli and Sajin Vas.
Muthuhettigama said he was committed to make kings but never wished to become president, and, therefore, should be left alone. He said that he was not concerned whether the Rajapaksa family became the royal family.
He said that he was looking for a gentleman with a backbone to solve his problem. If there was anyone like that he appealed him to come forward and solve it. He added that he was wondering why the President had come to hate him so much.
He appealed to the secretaries of SLFP and UPFA to keep their backbones straight and to protect the honour of their organisations. If his appeal was ignored, he would start a movement to protect SLFP in the South, he warned.
What happened to Reginald Cooray and Vijithamuni Soyza could happen to the UPFA politicians. It would be the best for everyone to be prepared, he said. He said that he would resort to legal action against the Secretaries of the UPFA and the SLFP.
