    UPDATE:

In a meeting with South Korea's foreign minister on Tuesday, the top Chinese envoy in Seoul refrained from elaborating on his country's position concerning a North Korean artillery attack that killed two South Korean marines, an official here said.

The dearth of words from Zhang Xinsen appeared to underscore the difficulties China faces in dealing with the aftermath of the indiscriminate attack its communist ally launched earlier Tuesday.

UPDATE: North Korea warns of retaliation; Seoul orders security beefed up

South Korea's president vowed Thursday to boost security around islands near the site of this week's artillery attack by North Korea.

His order to beef up security came as North Korea warned of more "retaliation" if Seoul carries out "reckless military provocations."

"We should not let our guard down in preparation for another possible North Korean provocation," South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said at an emergency government meeting Thursday.

    UPDATE:

Expats recalled as North Korea prepares for war

A mass exodus of North Korean workers from the Far East of Russia is under way, according to reports coming out of the region. As the two Koreas edged towards the brink of war this week, it appears that the workers in Russia have been called back to aid potential military operations.
