North Korea puts military on combat readiness

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has ordered his military to be on a combat footing, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said on Tuesday.

It quoted a local group of North Korea watchers as saying their sources there had told them Kim's command had been broadcast by a top military official.

Tensions have risen sharply on the peninsula after the South inmposed sanctions on its neighbour, which it accuses of sinking a naval ship in March, killing 46 sailors.

N.Korea to sever all relations with S.Korea

North Korea said Tuesday it was severing all relations with South Korea and cutting communications links, the official news agency reported.

The North said it would expel all South Korean personnel from a jointly-run industrial estate at Kaesong north of the border, and ban South Korean ships and planes from its territorial waters and airspace.

North Korea is to cut all relations with South Korea, Pyongyang's official news agency reports.

KCNA said the North was also expelling all South Korean workers from a jointly-run factory north of the border.
The move comes after an international report blamed North Korea for sinking a South Korean warship.

Pyongyang denies it torpedoed the Cheonan near the inter-Korean maritime border on 26 March, killing 46 sailors.

Seoul announced on Sunday it was ending trade relations with the North in response to the sinking.

South Korea says it plans to refer North Korea to the UN Security Council, and is seeking a unified international response to the incident.
Calls for restraint Tuesday's KCNA reports announcing the severing of all ties - including communications - said the North was also banning South Korean ships and planes from its territorial waters and airspace.
