Embassy attack
The Norwegian Government has put on trial seven of its Tamil citizens, once Sri Lankans, and an asylum seeker on charges of causing vandalism against the Sri Lanka Embassy in Oslo in April last year.
A report in Aftenposten, Norway’s leading newspaper quoted Public Prosecutor Marit Bakkavig as saying that two of those charged were under the age of 18 when the offence was committed. She said all eight who have been charged are teenagers or in their twenties.
“We believe that all those charged were within the embassy property and caused damage,” Ms. Bakkavig has told the newspaper.
One of the eight charged was an asylum seeker, she has added. The prosecutor has said seven are charged with serious vandalism of another state’s property whilst one has been indicted for violation of another state’s territory. The suspects face sentences up to seven years in prison.
The attack on the Sri Lanka embassy occurred on April 12 last year.
