State-owned Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) said today they have paid 4.5 million Sri Lankan rupees (US$35000) to secure the broadcasting rights of the 2012 Olympic games in Sri Lanka.
SLRC is demanding exclusivity within Sri Lanka from the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU). The ABU has the exclusive broadcasting rights in Asia.
Privately-owned MTV/MBC said they will show the 2012 Olympic games.
The ABU has requested from the two media networks to share the rights & offer the public extensive coverage of the games.
The Colombo commercial high court today issued an enjoining order against the ABU, preventing them from granting broadcasting rights to other channels. The order says only the SLRC has the rights to broadcast the 2012 Olympic games.
