Wannabe Bollywood stars nabbed in Wattala
Four youngsters from Wattala pretending to be the Bollywood heroes, Shah Rukh Khan, his wife Gauri Khan, Saif Ali Khan and his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor were arrested on Monday after their parents complained that the children had run away from home.
The youngsters, all aged 18, had changed their names to those of the celebrities and run away from home in
an attempt to flee to India to meet their heroes and try their luck in Bollywood movies.
According to their parents, the children had begun to even dress like their Bollywood heroes and insisted that their future lay in acting and, someday, they too would make it big in the film world. “They stopped studying and kept telling us they wanted to go to India. They told us to stop calling them by their names and instead to call them by the names of the celebrities or, else, they would run away from their homes,” the mother of one child told the Police.
“Even the walls of their rooms are covered with posters of these Bollywood stars,” the mother said.
The children, who did not get a positive answer from their parents regarding travel to India, finally decided to go on their own. After stealing their passports from their homes, the children spent a night at a friend’s house but were caught the next day when they were about to board a bus to Colombo. They only had Rs.5000 in their possession, along with a few clothes and their passports.
The children who were handed back to their families have now begun to live a ‘normal’ life and returned to school. “Bollywood movies can have a severely negative impact on children. Some children do not know where to draw the line between reel life and real life,” a Police official said. (JN)
