The Omicron variant evades the antibodies produced by booster jabs to a significant extent, according to new research from Germany. Early results points that boosters might not be a solution to Omicron.
Blood samples taken from subjects who had received three jabs performed better against omicron than those which had not been boosted, but was nevertheless much reduced compared to delta.
The following figure summarizes the lab results. - Omicron in Red
PS: BioNtech three months after booster only 25% neutralising versus 95% with Delta - Up to 37 times the reduction in Delta vs. Omicron.
Also note that the Human immune sytem is much more complicated than the behaviour of in-vitro tests. There are T-cells at work alongside the antibodies. The milder disease symptoms so far noted from South Africa points to immunisation retaining its efficacy against severe disease through non-neutralising antibodies and cellular immunity (T-cells) and/or intrinsically lower virulence of the Omicron variant.
