How to find the product you want for the best price.

I want to try to write a few articles on online shopping... hope this is useful for the elakiri.com community.


My first article, on how to find the item you want to buy...


Let us say the item you want is a camera:
Canon PowerShot A2300


The first thing to do is search for it on some popular shopping sites, such as Amazon, eBay, etc.
So I searched and found following prices.

As you can see, there are many different prices! But it is very important to check the shipping cost also!


Cost of shipping in USA
If you are going to get a friend to bring the product to Sri Lanka, or get it down via company like Kapruka Global Shop, you must check the US shipping cost. Good retailers usually offer FREE US shipping (for example Amazon).


Cost of shipping to Sri Lanka from USA
If it is shipped via another company, ask their cost to ship from USA to Sri Lanka...

You should also check the warranty given for the product. Here are some examples of different warranties offered:


US Warranty
Most US products have US Only warranty. In this case, make sure you are getting it to Sri Lanka via a person or company who can ship it back to US if a warranty claim is needed.


International Warranty
If the product has an international warranty, make sure Sri Lanka is covered!




lastly, remember Customs/Taxes/Duty


This is the most important one. If you get through a courier company or friend you then have to go to post office or customs and clear product, this is expensive and takes time.

You should ask if the company can handle customs payments for you! Also do they have TRCSL approval if you want to buy a phone from USA

A quick guide to understanding product condition


Brand new / in retail packaging.
This means product is brand new and has the retail box, like you usually buy in any shop.


Manufacturer refurbished / factory reconditioned.

Summary: This means the product may have bee briefly used (one or two days by customer perhaps, or was in a shop window, or used as a demo unit) but the manufacturer has taken it and checked it carefully and it should be good. The packaging may be a simple brown or white box indicating that it was repacked, or even original box with a label saying it was repackaged.



In general, It's an item that has been returned to the manufacturer, who then cleans, quality checks, and restores the item to like-new condition.



There are several reasons why a product might be returned to the manufacturer:

· The item was purchased by a customer who then returned it, either because it was the wrong product or for whatever reason the customer decided he or she didn't want it. Such a product may be unused or briefly used.
· The product had a cosmetic blemish, the box was dented, or there was some other minor defect.
The manufacturer cleans the product, performs a thorough inspection, makes any necessary repairs, ensures that it meets all factory specifications, and deems it in like-new condition.



Used
This means someone has used it. In such a case, examine photos carefully, check what warranty is offered, and what is included. If you are getting on eBay check the merchants reputation (look at their feedback).!


As Is / Parts only / repair
This means the product may be damaged, parts only, etc.
