On the rocks By Jayanka De Silva One does not arrive at that pitch of perfection except when one meets a compatriot with whom an understanding develops even without having seen each other before. Try as he might to assume a detached air every now and then he raised his eyes and at such moments turned on her an attentive gaze. He felt that such a scene could not be prolonged indefinitely in this place. Each time he looked at her he took care that his glance should be accompanied by a slight smile. Unlike the glances we usually direct at a person whom we scarcely know. He stared at her with a peculiar fixation. The three girlfriends were seated on he rocks enjoying the evening scene and the air which was fresh but not too chilly. She was seated near her companions lost in thought gazing far away into the distance. Her figure was slight and graceful, inclining even to fragility. The waxen pallor of her face was almost spiritual in its ivory like purity. There was an innate refinement a languid queenly hauteur about her which was unmistakable. At whiles a look, tense with suppressed meaning that imparted a charm few could resist. She looked vaguely into the distance in the way which she felt would most enhance the beauty of her eyes. For an instant she was silent with rather sad and downcast eyes. Inclination prompted her to speak but dignity told her to be silent. He was unmistakably handsome with an exquisite nose and he was what he looked every inch a gentleman. Waiting, always waiting to be asked. A prince charming to lay a wondrous love at her feet. Some one who would understand, take her in his sheltering arms in all the strength of his deep passionate nature and comfort her with a long long kiss. With all the heart of her she longs to be his only, for riches for poor, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. She leaned back ever so far to catch a glimpse of him. Her face was suffused with a divine an entrancing blush from straining back. She let him a full view of her. She wasn’t ashamed and he wasn’t either, to look in that immodest way. She would have cried out to him, held out her slender arms to him. The cry of a young girls love. A little strangled cry. She glanced at him quickly, a pathetic little glance of shy reproach. He was seeking to advance, the girl no longer giving any sign of response to his actions but doubtless considered his intentions. She rose. Was it goodbye? No , she had to go. But they would meet again. She would dream of him till then. She drew her self up to her full height. Their souls met in a last lingering glance and the eyes that reached her heart full of a strange shining hung on her sweet flower like face. She smiled at him wanly a smile that verged on tears and then they parted. He lost sight of her. He did not know whether she was the very rare person that he required in his life. He considered the miraculous possibility of their conjunction. Is this the woman pre destined to exist in order that they may have their share of sensual pleasure on this earth?
