Oscar winners
Director Martin Scorsese finally won best director after five previous nominations. The 64-year-old's mob epic, The Departed also took best picture.
In the end, Dame Helen Mirren's best actress win was the only victory for The Queen, which had been nominated in six categories. The 61-year-old has been Oscar-nominated twice before, but never won.
Forest Whitaker earned best actor for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. He revealed how he only ever got to watch films as a child from "the back seat" of his family's car "at the drive-in movie".
Alan Arkin won his first Oscar as supporting actor in Little Miss Sunshine. It was the 76-year-old's third nomination. He plays a foul-mouthed, drug-addicted grandfather in the offbeat comedy.
"Look what God can do," said Jennifer Hudson, winner of the supporting actress honour for her role in Dreamgirls. Three years ago, Hudson was competing in the reality TV series American Idol.
Italian film composer Ennio Morricone won an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar. The 78-year-old has been nominated five times - but never won.
Former US Vice-President Al Gore took home the prize for best documentary with his film, An Inconvenient Truth. He also joked with the audience about running in the next presidential race.
The winners of the acting awards - Alan Arkin, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Hudson and Forest Whitaker - pose together after the ceremony.
