Over 40,000 'fake doctors' in Sri Lanka -GMOA

COLOMBO (News 1st) : The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) said there are over 40,000 people impersonating doctors across the country.

GMOA Spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said complaints were received regarding such doctors treating patients in critical condition.

Dr. Wijesinghe said in certain instances medical attendants, nurses or a member of supplementary medical services were found to be posing as doctors and treating patients in their village or hometown.

He added that only a doctor has the knowledge, responsibility and authority to prescribe medicine for a patient, within the Sri Lankan health system.

The GMOA Spokesperson said no other group has the knowledge or authority to do so, adding that a patient can only obtain medicine or undergo a laboratory test prescribed by a doctor.
