Petrol, diesel, kerosene consumed by well to do people, says MP Ellawala Thero

    (Lanka-e-News, December 19, 2008, 9.15 AM)

Pointing out that petrol, diesel and kerosene is used by affluent people and trishaws are used by a small minority, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) leader Ellawala Medhananda Thero says that raising fuel price is not so unfair.

The monk further stated that the government could utilize the income from petroleum taxes etc. to cover the massive expenses for the war against terrorism and to develop the devastated areas.

The MP Thero further said that the Sinhalese kings also collected taxes to protect the kingdom. He also said that a change of government at this moment would halt the started tasks halfway.

Pointing out that the prices of rice and dhal etc. have gone up, the Thero said that it was inevitable and natural time to time.
He said that in 1977 there was an electorate that thought only about stomach. But now the people think of the country. The increase of the youth generation that thinks of country, nation and religion is a pleasing factor, he says.

Ellawala Medhananda Thero made these observations participating in the '7th Hour' TV programme broadcast by ITN yesterday morning (18).
