A Russian model, a photographer and another Russian national were arrested by Polonnaruwa police when the model was allgedly seen posing near the ruins of Nissanka Latha Mandapaya wearing a yellow robe. The model was also carrying a fan usually used by Buddhists monks and was posing in a ‘sexually suggestive manner’, police said.
The foreigners were released after a severe warning at the Police station.
The model is said to be a famous personality in Russia. The photographer was with his wife. According to Police, the model, her photographer and his wife had arrived in the island two weeks ago. They were scheduled to fly out of Sri Lanka the day following their arrest. The model was hired to pose for fashion photographs in exotic locations in the country.
They had spent the first few days in Colombo, before moving onto the Negombo and Southern coast. They had then visited Anuradhapura, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. and Polonnaruwa was to be the final stop on the itenary.
The three Russian nationals had arrived in Polonnaruwa from Negambo in a vehicle provided by a hotel in Negombo.
On the day of the photo shoot, the model had arrived wearing tight fitting clothes and had then draped the yellow robe around her and posed for photographs in sexually suggestive poses while carrying the fan, sources said.
She had also posed for photographs while straddling the lion statues at the Nissanka Latha Mandapaya.
A security guard at the site had told the visitors to stop what they were doing but was ignored. The guard had then informed officials at the Central Cultural Fund about the photo shoot.
On being alerted a team of officials from the cultural fund, including its project manager P R S Bandaranayake arrived at the location and requested the model and her photographer to stop what they were doing and to delete the images taken at the ruins. However, at this point, the Russians had started an argument with the officials.
The officials were forced to turn to the Police for assistance and the alleged offenders were taken to the Polonnaruwa Police station. At the station, the three Russians had pleaded with the Police, saying that they were due to fly out of the country the following day.
The officers at the Police station released the foreigners after the images of the Russian model taken at the site were deleted from the camera.
