17 aircrafts damaged, millions of dollars lost at Anuradhapura
(LeN, 2007 October 22, 9.45 PM-2nd edition) The damage caused by the LTTE air and ground dual attack on the Anuradhapura Air Base this morning has been raised to staggering millions of US dollars, the highest loss in the Sri Lanka Air Force history.
Unconfirmed reports say 17 air craft damaged by the attack and that the damaged fleet includes a Rs. 2.5 billion beach craft which can be airborne for a long time.
The damaged fleet, according to sources, contains one beach craft, one Bell helicopter, two MI-24 assault helicopters, one MI-17 transport helicopter, K-8 training aircrafts, Cessna light aircrafts and UAVs.
However, Air Force media spokesman Group Captain Ajantha Silva denied these figures and said that he has information on only four aircraft were damaged.
Meanwhile defense sources said that the security forces by mistake targeted the Bell 212 helicopter that crash-landed. Air Force spokesman said that a four member committee has been appointed to to probe the incident.
In the meantime, LTTE military spokesman Rasaiyah Ilanthiriyan said that 21 Black Tigers took part in the attack while two LTTE aircrafts dropped bombs. Eight aircrafts of the Sri Lanka Air Force were destroyed, he said.
