Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa inspects the military parade provided by the three armed forces, police and the Civil Defence Service during the Victory Day celebrations this morning (June 18) at the Galle Face Green. Sri Lanka has lesson to world on defeating terror - President Rajapaksa
We are aware that some countries being battered by terrorism have taken strength from the victories won by Sri Lanka over terrorism. It is time for the countries facing attacks from terrorism to look back and see where they had gone wrong, whereas Sri Lanka has succeeded, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his address to the Nation on the Victory Day celebrations at Galle Face, Colombo today.
It is a grave error of judgment to think that while being opposed to terrorism targeting you, to believe that terrorism that is no threat to you is good...The world has so far trod on this wrong path. Terrorism remains unvanquished because of this incorrect thinking. The countries that show sympathy towards terrorism and separatism will be the victims of terrorism. This is the lesson of history, President Rajapaksa further said.
Among the highlights of the President's address are:
* We have already appointed an Independent Commission to inquire into the causes that led to terrorism, the lessons we can learn from this, and the path to reconciliation.
*As long as we remember that those who sacrificed their lives now rest in the soil of our land, I declare with pride that our people shall not leave room for anyone to divide this motherland of ours.
*The people should have complete faith and confidence that the land that was liberated from terrorism through great sacrifice of life will not be handed over to the forces of separatism again.
*Our armed forces comprise those who went to battle carrying a gun in one hand, the Declaration of Human Rights the other, as well as taking food for the liberated people of the North and full of human kindness in their hearts.
*What those from abroad who seek to strengthen separatism are really doing is to once again corral the people of the north into camps...The world should look into what happened to all the aid that was given as relief for the Tamil people of the North. For thirty long years they did not see the development of roads, electricity and schools.
*It did not take us long to restore normalcy to the East that was affected by terrorism. We shall next resolve the problems faced from terrorism by the people in the North, by the end of this year.
*What is most needed to prevent the shedding of blood and tears for the country is to restore the hearts shattered by violence and ease such pain. I am confident that the Sri Lankan nation has the will to achieve this.
*We must line up under the slogan, 'We for the Country'. Many countries in the world have developed through the extra-ordinary endeavors of their people. We, who have astonished the world through success in our humanitarian operation, must do so in development, too. We must surprise the world through the unthinkable.

The defenders of the ocean, the Sri Lanka Navy, which forms a Golden Fence around the nation, took part in the First Anniversary National Victory Parade held under the patronage of the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa at Galle Face in Colombo today, the 18th of June 2010.
Prime Minister Hon. DM Jayaratne, Ministers, Members of Parliament and Diplomatic Corps, Secretary of Defence Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, many religious and civilian dignitaries and a large number of grateful citizens made their presence at the occasion of the first anniversary of Victory Day to pay tribute to the valiant troops who defeated terrorism decisively.
Acting Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunathileka, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, Director General of Civil Defence Department Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris and Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya were in attendance.
Representing the Sri Lanka Navy, Commodore NAN Sarathsena rode in the observation vehicle at the parade. The Naval Contingent comprised of Naval Forces from the Northern Front Commanded by Rear Admiral Shriyantha Udawatte, the Eastern Front commanded by Rear Admiral Susith Weeresekera and the Vanni Front commanded by Rear Admiral Rohan Amarasinghe. They comprised of seamen, a miscellaneous section of sailors, patrolmen, Special Boat Squadron, Rapid Action Boat Squadron and Fast Attack Craft Flotilla personnel and women sailors. Two elite SBS personnel took part in the free fall sky diving that followed proving their prowess in aerial stunts.
Sri Lanka Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessels, Fast Gun Boats, Fast Attack Craft and Arrow boats sailed past in a formation in the seas off Galle Face Green paying their tribute as the Naval contingent marched past the special dais where the President took the salute of the Armed Forces and the Police. Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), SLNS Sayura, SLNS Samudura, SLNS Sayurala and SLNS Jayasagara, Fast Missile Vessels (FMVs) SLNS Suranimala and SLNS Nandimithra, Fast Gun Boats Abheetha and Ranadheera, 12 Fast Attack Craft (FACs), Passenger Craft “Jet Liner” and A 543 and 20 Arrow boats participated in the Sail Past displaying their manoeuvrability.

Sri Lanka Navy played a pivotal role in eradicating the three-decade long brutal terrorism from the soil of Sri Lanka by battling it out on the high seas with an unsurpassed commitment to the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Motherland. Naval forces confronted the enemy from three war fronts and defeated them decisively in well-coordinated Naval battles recording resounding victories.
NAVAL TROOPS OF THE EASTERN WAR FRONT
The Naval troops of the Eastern Front fulfilled a tremendous task by keeping sea routes secure for the provision of essential food supply to the innocent civilians trapped in the Northern peninsula. They thwarted the LTTE attacks and kept a huge Naval barrier to disrupt the North-East LTTE supply network. They fought valiantly to clear the route for advancing troops of SL Army through marshy sea areas and provided the Naval Gun power support from the coast while providing continuous sea transportation for injured soldiers and civilians.
NAVAL TROOPS OF THE NORTHERN WAR FRONT
The Naval troops of the Northern War Front contributed to protect the lives of innocent civilians living in Northern islands. They coordinated the unloading of essential food items at Kankasanturai Harbor and distributed them without delay. Naval troops provided transport facilities for military and police personnel deployed in the Northern peninsula, blocked the LTTE sea supply routes and protected the advancing Army troops on land from LTTE attacks via sea and lagoon areas.
NAVAL TROOPS OF THE WANNI WAR FRONT
The Naval troops of the Wanni War Front contributed in the capture of LTTE supply routes and the protection of the advancing Army troops from LTTE attacks from sea. Four strong Naval defence lines were established to prevent the escape of the LTTE cadres by sea and to trap them to the land. They also made a remarkable contribution in rescuing thousands of civilians who fled from the LTTE grip admits heavy sea tiger attacks. Naval troops provided them with necessary food and medicine and evacuated the fleeing civilians using sea routes while mounting heavy counter-attacks on sea tigers to weaken their suicide threat.
Salute to the valiant Forces!
Hence, on this historic occasion, Sri Lanka Navy stands proud to be part of the collective effort to achieve the final victory in vanquishing separatist terrorism from the soil of Mother Lanka and feels a humble happiness in its contributions to accomplish the mission entrusted.
