Magistrate imposes fine of Rs. 7,500

The Mt Lavinia Chief Magistrate Nirosha Fernando imposed a fine of Rs. 7,500 on a hotel owner who pleaded guilty to the charge of selling contaminated worm-infested Kotthu Roti.
The suspect in this case was Farook Mohamed Aswin, the manager of Pillawoos Hotel located on the Galle Road at Ratmalana.
A couple who had partaken a meal of Kotthu Roti from this hotel recently had observed live worms in the mixed chicken curry and hastened to complain to the Mt Lavinia Police, who apprehended the suspect and later released on bail and the matter was brought to the notice of the Health Officer of the Dehiwala-Mt Lavinia Municipal Council.
The hotel was subjected to an inspection by the health officer and ordered all food items that were unfit for consumption to be destroyed.
Charges were framed against the manager Mohamed and W. Don Ajith the cook for preparation and selling worm-infested Kotthu Roti.
At the hearing of this case the manager pleaded guilty and was fined Rs. 7,500 and the cook was discharged.
