Piyangala hermitage and historical caves blasted for rubble

‘Lankatruth’ reported on the 19th that Piyangala cave was on the verge of being destroyed and Sri Lanka will lose it forever. Despite opposition from environmental organizations, residents in the area and scholars the strongmen in the government including certain powerful ministers continue to maintain the quarry carrying out powerful blasts in the area. The ‘Organization to Protect Heritage of Digamadulla’ too carried out a protest campaign against the attempt to destroy this historical hermitage at Ampare.

Assistant Director of excavations divisions of the Archeological Department Rohan Perera, who was in a drunken state at the site, had dispersed the blasters after they had promised no blasts would be carried out. Ven. Siridigane Sirithilakasiri Thero, the Registrar of Ampara Shasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya and representative of ‘Organization to Protect Heritage of Digamadulla’ said as a result of the activities carried out by the quarry Veddha frescoes belonging to pre-historic era have been damaged. He said the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Commissioner of Archeology and District Secretary for Ampare were informed regarding the destruction of the historical cave but no action has been taken.

Evidence regarding pre-historic human activities exists in the area and allowing such valuable historical and cultural heritage to be devastated is a national crime as well as a disgrace to the modern human civilization as well as the future society. The historical facts that exist here cannot be found anywhere else nor could they be created. Hence, it is the responsibility of all patriots to safeguard the historic Piyangala Hermitage and the cave.

Piyangala resists at demolitions

Report -III

Wanted to make some updating regarding the issue.

As got to know from our sources on-site (in Digamadulla) , the demolitions at Piyangala quarry were ceased due to pressure exercised by the mass organizations and by villagers. Further we noted that also Ven Ellawala Medhananda Thero intervened to protect the Piyangala site.

Our sources were unable to clarify about the damages caused to the Pre-Historic Veddha frescos. But, they identified other ancient inscriptions (sel lipi) are locating just 300-250 meters away from the main demolition site. They were present also during the geological monitoring and said that the vibration rate was at about 10.6 units (a higher rate). These data clearly shows that further demolition can damage remaining inscriptions and fresco designs permanently .

Finally , the mass demonstrations, formidable media work and extensive pressure exercised by patriotic monks, organizations and by persons have been able to stop this national crime at least for this moment.
