Patriotic National Movement President (PNM) Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera said on Wednesday (April 30) that although JVP had branded the Pillaiyan Group India's 'cat's paw' there was no evidence to prove it.
Dr. Amarasekera was addressing a meeting held at the National Library Services Board Auditorium, Independence Square, Colombo.
He also said that there was no proof of the Pillaiyan Group was violating election laws after it entered the Democratic mainstream and contested Pradheshiya Sabha elections.
The PNM leader termed the forthcoming Eastern Province Elections a contest between imperialism and patriotic forces. He urged the people not to vote for the UNP-TNA-SLMC Alliance that was representing the anti-national elements.
SLMC Chief Rauff Hakeem had struck a deal with the LTTE to help create a separate Islamic State in the East while allowing Prabhakaran top control the Tamil community in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, alleged Dr. Amarasekera.
PNM members Dr. Wasantha Bandara, Professors Walter Marasinghe and Upali Jayasekera, Cyril Enderamulla, Lalith Sapumaldeniya and Film Actor Cyril Wickremage also participated in the press meeting
He denied that their movement had received any privileges from the Government. It is because of the PNM's independent patriotic stance that people like the Venerable Elle Gunawansa, Wimal Weerawansa, Dinesh Gunawardena, Arjuna Ranatunga, Anura Kumara Disanayake and Naveen Dissanayake had joined the movement, he said.
PNM member Senaratne de Silva said that the movement had nothing to do with the split in the JVP and or the planned formation of a new political party by Wimal Weerawansa.
