An Indian man has been charged with importing heroin into Australia using Bibles.
Police and Australian border officials announced Tuesday an international package containing 29 Bibles was searched on Feb. 20.
Eight of the Bibles were found to be hollowed out and contained concealed packages wrapped in carbon paper and plastic, police said. Further investigation revealed the packages contained approximately 900 grams of a light brown granular powder which tested positive as heroin.
The heroin has an estimated street value of $1.3 million.
A man was arrested Monday at Adelaide International Airport. He has been charged with importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug.
The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
