Three police officers have been interdicted over the suspicious death of a youth under police custody on Monday, Police Spokesperson S.P. Preshantha Jayakody told Daily Mirror online. The youth had died while in custody of the Kottawa Police.
S.P. Jayakody said that a police sub inspector and two constables had been interdicted and a special police team had been appointed to investigate the death of the youth despite the Kottawa Police maintaining that he had died after suffering a heart attack.
However relatives of the victim have raised suspicion over the circumstances which led to his demise and have demanded for an impartial inquiry.
The 34 year old victim, identified as Nalaka Peiris, died at the Kottawa police station on Monday after being arrested on Sunday night over his inability to produce identification documents.
According to the police the victim was also wanted for several robberies but his friends and relatives said he was not a criminal. The relatives who had visited the police station on Monday were told he had died while in police custody after suffering a heart attack.
His body was taken to the Kalubowila hospital and relatives and friends of the victim had gathered outside the police station on Monday demanding an inquiry over his death. (Daily Mirror online)
