A tense situation continued to prevail in the Mutuwal area today after 20 suspects were taken into custody over the clash with the police last night with residents claiming that the police had now resorted to taking revenge.

A mob surrounded the Mutuwal police station last night to vent their anger after a drug dealer in the area who was arrested ended up in hospital with injuries to his arm sustained while in police custody.

Residents in the area claimed that the police arrested several youth who were not involved in last night’s incident. They also charged that their property was damaged by the army and the police early this morning.

However police spokesman S.P Priyashantha Jayakody denied the allegations saying the police or the army have no reason to damage the property of the area residents. “We sent several teams to bring the situation under control with the help of the army”, he said.

On receiving information that the drug dealer who was arrested yesterday was injured while in police custody, residents of the area had attempted to attack the police station with clubs, iron bars and stones last night, the police said.

The police claimed the youth sustained injuries when he attempted to break a glass inside the police station.

Police have launched what they call a crack down on drug dealers in the Mattakkuliya area after overnight tension in the area, but villages are disputing the purpose of the operation.

Police have arrested over 15 persons claiming they were involved in drug dealing, but villagers say that they were arresting persons who were involved in the protest overnight.

The tension broke out after villagers stormed the Mattakkuliya police post to protest in the manner a suspect had been taken into custody.

But, police said that the protest started due to a misinformation after the people assumed that one of the suspects arrested had died in police custody when he had only cut his hand by breaking a glass in the police post.

Early this morning in an apparent revenge attack some of the houses were attacked by unidentified groups, but villagers claim they were armed forces personnel.

More troops and police have been moved into the area now.
