Mahela Jayawardene has said his poor form in recent one-day matches was a factor in his decision to resign as captain of Sri Lanka.

"I was not making runs according to the standards I had set myself," Jayawardene said in Colombo, a day after he announced his resignation. "I have been thinking about it for a while and it was the right decision made at the right time."

Jayawardene, 31, has made just one half-century in his last 17 ODI innings. His resignation came three days after Sri Lanka lost 4-1 to India in their home ODI series, and he said it was so that his successor could build a team for the 2011 World Cup. "This is the ideal time to leave my successor to make his own imprint," said Jayawardene.

It is not immediately clear who will succeed him but the obvious choice will be Kumar Sangakkara, the current vice-captain and a close personal friend of Jayawardene's. "There is an obvious successor to the throne," was all Jayawardene would say.

Not because I haven't got anything better to do... but I was thinking in Mahela's shoes for sometime trying to figure out what other factors could have effected this!!

Somehow it struck me that the next tour is Pakistan in Pakistan right? Mahela already under heavy pressure and under criticism for his batting and captaincy too to a certain extent, then he goes off for tests away... and away tours are always hectic and pressure, and it is more likely that this away tour might not yield good results and maybe Mahela thought if I go on this tour... which is naturally difficult to win, and loose that tour too.... I will almost derinfitly will be sacked because then 2 series back to back losses in both form of the game!

So he might have felt better to announce his retirement as captain and go on with the tour.. which is deffa less pressure for him? what do ya'll think?

The decision he took was a bad one according to my view.He was doing well in the past .He has proved him self as a great captain. And he took the team to finals.

Poor form can be a factor.but he could have waited a little more.

I still remember when he was delivering goods to the SL team. And he kept on doing that for a long time, and his age is not that high to take a such a decision.

did u guys know that Mahela has the best winning percentage of all captains in SL......
I think he was marvelous..... but he's not retiring yet no....so he will bat and of coz with less pressure.....so we will be able to see some gud batting from mahela....
