President is violating all election laws, says Kiriella (Lanka-e-News, January 20, 2009, 9.20 AM) Kandy district United national Party (UNP) MP Lakshman Kiriella asks who the Chief Minister candidate of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is, either President Mahinda Rajapakse or Sarath Ekanayaka. Addressing a press conference held in the official residence of the Opposition Leader, Kiriella charged that the President was violating all election laws. He said that 27,000 packets of rice had been distributed from Mahaweli Reach hotel by Sunday (18) against laws. Kiriella said that the President summoned plantation workers to the President’s House in Kandy and distributed sarongs and sarees among them. A meal was hosted for the bank employees of the district in the President’s House. Furthermore, applications for employment, foreign jobs and land distribution are circulated via the village officers, Kiriella said. He said that he observed the procession of the persons publicized as those who joined the UPFA quitting UNP. Ninety nine percent of them were Sri Lanka Freedom Party members and the demonstration was led by a former Provincial Councilor who left UNP six years ago.
