Niyas Moulavi who rendered invaluable service for national unity has suddenly passed away.
He has died after admission to hospital in Badulla following a sudden illness. Niyas Mohamed Moulavi was on a national mission as a Presidential advisor on religious affairs as well as a popular orator. He rendered much service for the Muslim community as the President of the Sri Lanka Muslim Peace Council and an active member of the Jamiyatulla Ulemma Organisation. He also served the future Muslim generation as the Principal of the Ehsaniya Arabic School. He understood the essence of the religion and led an honourable life. His remains were brought from Badulla to his residence on Peer Saibo Street in Colombo after his sudden death. President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited his residence this evening to pay last respects to his remains. The Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera, Swami Kurukkal Kali Kanakaratna, Governor of the Western Province Alavi Moulana, Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva and Parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwer were amongst a large number of people who paid their last respects to the remains of Niyas Moulavi. The final rites will be held at the Muslim Burial Grounds at Maligawatte tonight. He was also closely related to the ITN. He participated in several programmes on ITN such as "Doramadalawa". He committed himself for the coexistence of religions. He was a skilled orator on Buddhist Philosophy as well as Sinhala language, and was close to the people. MAY HE ATTAIN "JINNATHUL FIRDOUSE".
