President who boasts he has long political experience under his belt has done nothing for the people; only hit all below the belt; Upeksha Swarnamali
(Lanka-e-News, April 1, 2010, 9.15AM) Gampaha District UNP candidate Upeksha Swarnamali addressing a news conference yesterday (31) at the UNP media unit said, the President Mahinda Rajapakse and Minister Mervyn Silva crow about their political experience and therefore their ability to make the best contribution to the people and the country’s development, but in truth what have they contributed ? she asked. Doing lip service that they can serve the people, save Democracy, install good governance and develop the country is not enough, she added.
This meeting was held by the Women’s representatives of the UNP to exchange views on the UNP publication ‘Dheya dinawana aya’
She gave the following answer in reply to a question posed by the media that, she being a popular actress and when she can contribute to the field of acting, why is she trying her hand at a subject of which she has no experience.
I have participated in discussions held by the media and the intelligentsia in regard to the country’s civil and fundamental rights erosion, destruction of Democracy and good governance. I could perceive there is a great deal of evil, venom and vengeance in the present governance, going by the manner in connection with the last elections and processes. I realized that I must make my contribution to build up the truth and country’s progress, and throw the present political garbage of falsehood, duplicity and deceit on which this Govt. is oiling and feeding itself. This garbage must go to the place it ought to be. This is why I took this bold decision.
If I am not prepared to make sacrifices whether I am a screen and stage artiste or not, I would not have entered politics. Even when I could have joined the Govt.’s ‘tomorrow for youth’ and ‘Nil Balakaya’ and secured a position where I could have drawn a salary of Rs. Two to three lakhs per month, I sought this course of action because I want truth to prevail and considered country’s progress as primary. I am not hankering after benefits and perks for myself. It is my honest desire to work for the country.
After deciding to contest the General election I realized under what dangerous circumstances I am in and in what perilous plight the people are. Village folks are jobless. No infrastructure facilities. Except concreted roads, nothing else has been done. Of what purpose is a a govt. which cannot provide the basic necessities to the people? This people‘s abysmal predicament is because the representatives of the Govt. are pursuing a selfish self fattening agenda after promising the sun and the moon to the people at elections, They are hankering after their own salary increases, perks and retention of power and position at the expense of the country and the people, she pointed out.
I hope the people are not foolish that much as to be fooled again by this Govt. The people have to think wisely and cast their votes. With all the political experience of which the President boasts, and his Govt. claims, what have they done to this country‘s development, alleviation of people’s acute suffering ? she asked.
With this Govt. in power none can expect gentleman politics or a fair and free elections . The Govt.’s obsession is to be in power by unleashing terror, suppression of media and oppression of the people forever, she observed.
