Honestly... all these are fancy titles at the whims and the preferences of the employers. I would guess probably more than 90% of the so called Software Engineers are nothing but Programmers or Software Developers. I could agree with you on this to a certain level. Not 90% but around 30% people do not engage themselves in a level where they could reffed to them as Software Engineers. This is highly dependent on the personnel skill and knowledge level. These people will not survive the industry for much longer (max 2-3yrs). That includes Engineering degree holders too. A Software Engineer should have a Degree in Engineering with training and in many countries you are legally required to have an Engineering degree to hold the title. This is a wrong interpretation. So you must be referring highly developed countries like SL where Engineering degree holders whining about IESL in-capabilities ?. But not so developed countries like UK, US, US, many other European countries has their different standard which are more meaningful. That's what makes them different. They are the ones who have the overall responsibility for the big picture of the system. A Programmer often is a person who has a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science. However, to become a clever Programmer you don't need anything other than an innate skill and abilities in programming. How on earth you tell these ridiculous things. So you think people with Engineering degrees can understand and do things considering the bigger picture and will automatically assume those role since they have the certificate ? Just check how many people had being released with engineering degrees from many software companies just because they don't have the capacity. Its a plenty. And on the other hand check how many people leads the industry in the world and advances the humanity without even having any sort of degree. These are just words from frustrated, deceitful weak people who are incapable of handling a challenge.
