The Private Bus Operators Association today said it would go on strike as planned in the second week of January in protest against the Western Province Passenger Transport Authority’s decision to increase the fleet of buses by 20% in the province.

The association’s President, Gemunu Wijeyratne said this decision contravenes the Supreme Court decision which held that it was mandatory to introduce timetables for each bus route. (Daily Mirror online)

Private Bus Operators in the Western Province threatened to go on strike on the second week of January 2011. If the government doesn’t agree to our proposal to increase bus fares we will opt to strike, Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne expressed.


Speaking at a press briefing held today he said that the decision had been made following an extensive discussion with the private bus owners of the Kaluthara, Gampaha and Colombo Districts earlier today.


Wijeratne accused the Western Province Passenger Transport Authority of preparing to increase the number of bus route permits in the Western Province by 20% while already there is an excess of busses In the Western Province exists.


Eventhough a Private Transport Services Minister has been appointed, he has not been given any power or authority, he further expressed.
