Sri Lankan residents in Hong Kong demonstrated last Friday against the mixing of politics and sports. They expressed solidarity with the Chinese people on the controversy over Beijing Olympics.
They held a demonstration in Kowloon Park, HK in support of China as an expression of gratitude to Beijing for its help to combat LTTE terrorism in Sri Lanka.
The protestors also expressed dissaproval of Western powers manipulating the Tibet issue to serve their anti-China agenda by timing it for the Olympics.
The Sri Lankan demonstrators supporting the Olympic torch relay carried placards and banners that said:
Keep politics out of spots!
LTTE, keep terror out of sports!
The demonstrations drew attention to the LTTE's vile nature that led it not only to assassinate a Cabinet member (Trade Minister Jeyeraj Fernandopulle) but also to kill in the process a number of innocent athletes and onlookers at a Sinhala and Tamil New Year sports event at Weliweriya last month. The demonstrators also referred to the attempted assassination of Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge. Tharaka Gunarathna and Lalith Addaraarachi of the Hong Kong Sri Lankan’s Association were the organizers of the protest.
This brutal and senseless action of the Tigers in turning a sports ground into a killing field was second only to the brutal massacre by Arab extremists of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics of 1972.
