Further to our earlier communication we give below, the Programme for Professor Samaranayake's funeral arrangements.

We earnestly request all of you to join with the funeral procession at 3.30 pm at the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress on the Wednesday , 13 th June 2007

The remains will arrive in Colombo on Monday 11th June (AM hours) and will lie at his residence at 929/21, Jayanthi Mawatha, Ethul Kotte, Kotte till Wednesday morning of 13th June 2007.


Official Obituary notice.

Vidya Jyothi Professor V.K. Samaranayake, Emeritus Professor of Computer Science, University of Colombo and Chairman, Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), son of late Mr. and Mrs. V. W. Samaranayake, brother of Prof. V. A. Samaranayake (University of Missouri, Rolla, USA), husband of Sriya (Retired Deputy Commissioner, Inland Revenue), father of Samitha (Oracle Corporation, USA) and Nayana (Google Inc, USA), Son-in-Law of late Mr. and Mrs. Don Coranelis Abeyaratne of Kathaluwa expired in Sweden.

The remains will lie at 929/21, Jayanthi Mawatha, Ethul Kotte from 6.00 p.m. on Monday 11th until 9.00 a.m. on Wednesday and thereafter at the Professor V. K. Samaranayake Auditorium, University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) from 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Cremation will take place thereafter at the General Cemetery, Kanatta at 5.00 p.m. No flowers by request.

    The funeral arrangements have now been changed.

    The funeral will be at the Independence Square.

    The revised programme is as follows :


    State Patronage for Prof. V.K. Samaranayake Funeral at
    Independence Square

    The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to accord a funeral for late
    Vidya Jyothi Professor V.K. Samaranayake with full state patronage. The
    funeral will now take place under full state patronage at the
    Independence Square, Colombo on Wednesday 13th June 2007. According to
    Professor P.W. Epasinghe, Presidential Advisor and the Acting Chairman
    of the Information & Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka
    (ICTA), H.E. the President has advised the Ministry of Public
    Administration and Home Affairs to accord a funeral with state patronage
    to the late Professor.

    According to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs, the
    government has taken this decision in appreciation of the services
    rendered by the late Professor Samaranayake to the ICT Industry in Sri
    Lanka. According to the Chairman of the Funeral Committee, Dr. Ruvan
    Weerasinghe, the Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs,
    Honorable Karu Jayasuriya chaired a meeting this morning with the
    members of the funeral committee to discuss the funeral arrangements of
    the late Professor.

    Accordingly, the funeral of late Professor V.K. Samaranayake will now
    take place at 4.00 pm on 13th June 2007 at the Independence Square.

    The remains of late Professor V.K. Samaranayake are currently lying at
    his residence in Jayanthi Mawatha, Ethul Kotte. Tomorrow, 13th June at
    9.30 am, after the religious ceremony, his remains will be taken to the
    Professor V.K. Samaranayake auditorium at the University of Colombo
    School of Computing (UCSC) for the public to pay their last respects.
    The Late Professor’s remains will then be taken to
    Independence Square
    in a procession leaving the University of Colombo at 3 pm.

    All who wish to participate in this procession are requested to gather
    under their respective banners at the Reid Avenue entrance to the
    University grounds. The procession will proceed along Reid Avenue and
    Independence Avenue to arrive at Independence Square at 4.00 pm.
