Directed by Michael Mann, Public Enemies is crime drama about the FBI’s efforts to nab the notorious bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp). Set during the era of the Great Depression, the story tells the tale of Dillinger, who became a folk hero among the public as he robbed the banks, that the people thought were responsible for the Great Depression. As Dillinger’s exploits increased and he became nearly unstoppable, J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup), the founder of FBI, christened him as America’s first Public Enemy Number One. He then gave a free rein to his top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) to capture Dillinger and his gang which included sociopath Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi).
