Quad is a very unstable platform. that is why you can move it so agile.
If you drain the batteries, it will loose the thrust and you will be buying a new one or spare parts.

If it lost the signal what happen depends on your autopilot installed.

depending on it
1.It will come to a predefined position (need gps)
2.it will fall
3.it will retain position


Failsafe is the mechanism that will activate when you loose signal or battery levels are dropping. This failsafe will handle above things I mentioned.

if it is a branded one like phantom or cheerson if will return to the point of origin in case if it loose signal
other cheap brands like syma will drop outta sky
if you gonna buy phantom from ebay I strongly recommend to buy it from sri lanka
cuz i lost my phantom 2 to customs couldn't get it cleared
if it a syma then oki it wont be an issue
