According to HKEPC, AMD is considering letting its partners decide upon the faith of the Radeon HD 3850 X2 cards and as we've already seen Asus' experiment with a HD 3850 X3 card, it's not hard to see that t here's an interest from the partners to make such a product.
AMD it looking for a card to compete in the US$299-375 market according to the article, as this is the current marketplace for the 8800GTS. However, AMD doesn't seem too keen to foot the bill when it comes to R&D of such a card and this is why the company is hoping that its partners will come up with their own products.
With companies such as Sapphire, PowerColor and GeCube having made their own efforts in the past with dual X1600, X1950 and HD 2600 parts, it's not hard to see where this is heading. It looks like dual GPU cards are indeed here to stay, it's just a question if the market will accept them for being as good as a single GPU high-end card.
HKEPC recons we'd see cards in Q2, although we'd go as far as to say that we'd see the first ones showing up at Computex.
