COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's supreme court on Tuesday ruled President Mahinda Rajapaksa can begin his newly-won six-year term in November, giving him an extra year in power after he called polls two years before his first term expired.
"The Supreme Court says the new term begins on November 19 this year," an official in the president's office said on condition of anonymity. A senior presidential ally, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the date.

Stock of ballot papers found in Ratnapura

A stock of ballot papers marked in favor of opposition common candidate Sarath Fonseka was detected in Ratnapura, a United National Party (UNP) spokesman said.

The ballot papers were handed over to Ratnapura district UNP MP Thalatha Atukorake.

The ballot papers were in turn handed over to the deputy leader of UNP Karu Jayasuriya who called on the Malwatte and Asgiri Chapter Mahanayaka’s short while ago.
