Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said today that the opposition would be forced to act to stop the country from sliding into dictatorship.
He did not specific what kind of action the opposition intended to take but said that they may be necessary if the government does not stop moves that are devaluing Parliament and stifle the freedom of the media as well as people’s rights.
He said the rejection of the Right to Information Bill that was brought by the UNP is a clear indication of the Government disinterest in protecting media freedom. “The government wants to hide all the dirt under the carpet,” he said.
The Opposition Leader also said that the leadership training for university students was not discussed in Parliament while the issue of leasing out of some islands in Puttlam was also hushed up.
