If Ranil gets his way, he'll sell this country; he'll resurrect the LTTE, not economy.
Rainsing money is not everything. The leader should love this country; respect it; care for it. What matters is the long term welfare of the country and its people; not short term increase in wealth.
Like someone had pointed out, Ranil privatized many institutions; provided weapons and support to the terrorists. Actions like these destroy the country in the long run. All leaders before Mahinda fed the terrorists so that short term they wouldn't have problems. But that led to more deaths of our soldiers (Colombo people don't see the soldiers' deaths because the majority of soldiers are from villages.), dragging of war, dragging the country down.
Mahinda may not be the ideal. But he at least knows what is the best for the majority of this country. He loves this country. He can lead. He can represent this nation. What did Ranil do during the last few years? He was running around the world licking white boots and painting a wrong picture of this country. He supported LTTE for his personal political gains; he supported Kukula and other minority parties for his political gains.
Does this man even live in this country for two consecutive weeks? What does he know about this country? Its people, culture, religion and language? What does he know about the history of this country?
Can he even stand for himself? If there's a stupid law that says only married people can become a president, he should have worked to discard that rule; he should have worked for gay people to have the same rights as heterosexuals. What did he do? He hides the truth about himself, and lives a lie; he married another gay woman, so that 'officially' he's qualified to become the president. Why? For personal political gain: he fears that truth will stand in the way of his political dreams. If he cared about the gay people like him, he'd be going around the world talking about gay rights, and not about non-existing discrimination against Tamils.
The only people in UNP who may work for Sri Lankans are Sajith and V.J.M. Lokubandara. Sajith may think about personal gains but at least to improve his image, he may do something good for the country. V.J.M. is too passive to do any harm-I think. I don't know.
If the UNP can improve the country, they should have ended the war themselves, without waiting for anybody else to do it. They could have done it much easier too because the LTTE was not as powerful during their era.
In fact, I think any campaign for Ranil should appear in the jokes section.
