Sabaragamuwa province UNP Chief Ministerial candidate Ranjan Ramanayaka and UNP MP Dunesh Gankanda sustained injuries when their convoy came under attack by UPFA supporters in the palabaddala area of the Ratnapura district today evening, party General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Timesonline.
Mr. Ramanayaka said he sustained slight injuries, but said at least eight of their vehicles had been badly damaged.
Mr. Attanayaka said that he spoke to Mr. Ramanayaka who was at the Pelmadulla police short while ago and was told that he had sustained injuries.
Eyewitnesses said that the convoy was stoned and the first vehicle in the convoy was the most damaged vehicle.
The attack came ahead of a proposed visit by opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Ratnapura district on Friday and Saturday.
Western Provincial Council opposition leader Kithsiri Kahatapitiya who is handling Mr. Ramanayaka’s campaign told Timesonline that a large group surrounded the vehicles and attacked them with stones.
